I noticed on the Lynchburg sub-Reddit a few days ago a post titled, “Another looking for church post…” I see similar posts from time to time on different social media platforms and try to take a minute to read the post and the responses. In my cynical view, a vast majority of the responses to these posts are responder-centered and not original poster-centered.

This post from Reddit did contain a response that caught my attention. The response was a follow-up to another responder who mentioned “Trinity Episcopal or First Unitarian” as places where the poster (agnostic husband) and wife (mostly Christian) might feel comfortable. The responder to that said, “I second the UU church. They are a denomination of shared values, not shared beliefs. That said, this is the most Christian-tinged UU church I’ve come across.” While I’ve heard that from a couple of other people, in each case it was in reference to a time more than 15 years ago, close to a decade before I began attending UUCL. Some in our congregation have been/are triggered by different forms of Christianity, me included. I have come to the realization that my triggers are actual people I’ve interacted with and not what I believe the idea of Jesus stands for. This feels like a time where the actions of many people who profess to be Christian and the ideals of Jesus are greatly misaligned. I hope we as a congregation continue to, as Terre says, “Love on people” in the coming days. And I hope if that Reddit responder ever attends UUCL again, they can honestly say we are “the most love-tinged UU church they’ve ever come across.”
